Khmer Rouge Tribunals to be Digitized and Broadcast for the Next Generation

PHNOM PENH: The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), also known as the Khmer Rouge Tribunal, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Cambodian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) on the afternoon of October 19, to produce digital education content, short videos and documentaries to provide comprehensive education and outreach to the next generation of students and youth via documents and archives obtained from the ECCC trial process which spanned more than 16 years from 2006 to 2022.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, Sok Puthyvuth, stated that the signing of the MoU will promote cooperation and joint implementation focusing on digital content production, video documentation and broadcasting related to the trial process of former senior Khmer Rouge leaders.

The Secretary of State said that the values that established the Khmer Rouge Tribunal provided justice to the victims, both those who lost their lives and those who have survived to this day. He said the tribunal provided relief to the wounds of the past and eradicated a culture of impunity while strengthening respect for the rule of law. He hopes that documenting the trial will be a way to help the younger generation know the truth about what happened under the Khmer Rouge regime and allow Cambodia to close the book on its dark history and turn a new page by seeking reconciliation and rebuilding society.

He said, "I believe that this cooperation will bring benefits to the younger generation to remember the dark history of the Khmer Rouge regime, the process of seeking justice for the victims and the values of peace under the Win-Win policy of Hun Sen, the former Prime Minister and the Supreme Founder and Father of Peace in Cambodia."

The Director of the Educational Broadcasting Cambodian (EBC), Cheng Srey Tam, also hopes that the two institutions will work together to produce educational content to disseminate widely to students, so the Cambodian people can learn about this bitter Khmer history for their own study and research, and to never forget it.

Acting Director of Administration of the ECCC, Sec. of State Hem Kranh Tony, expects that after signing the MOU, the ECCC and EBC will promote the transfer of multidisciplinary knowledge and skills, including human resources and good practices to provide a quality public service.
